About

Managing Director, Simon Arnold.
Through arnold.co.nz, Simon advises research providers and funders on research strategies (including roadmapping) and value creation, particularly focusing on physics and engineering.
A recent contribution to this area is NZ’s public investment in R&D, doing it better
As well as being MD of arnold.co.nz, Simon is a director of Otago University spin-out Heat and Light Ltd, a technical advisor to BFSNZ and Nufuels, and is convener of the Liquid Biofuels & Co-products interest group of the Bioenergy Association of New Zealand.
Simon has been active in industry organisations since having been CEO of the NZ Manufacturers Federation in the 1990s. Until recently he has been part time CEO of NZ's National Energy Research Institute (NERI), he has been a past President and life member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and chaired the Policy Council of Business Central.
While he was at NERI he oversaw and was principle author of two strategies to address NZ's energy research needs. Energy Research Strategy 2017 identified the key issues New Zealand faces requiring local R&D. One of these was the impact of the need to cut energy sector GHGs and in 2023 we published From Fossil Fuels to Local Renewables.
For the past 20+ years he has also been working more generally on creating value from New Zealand's physics, energy and engineering capabilities, with a particular emphasis on industry creation. More details can be found on LinkedIn.
